Written by Will Durant in The Story of Philosophy (1926), summarising Nicomachean Ethics II.1. The words are Durant's, not Aristotle's. Durant's fuller sentence continues 'excellence, then, is not an act but a habit'.

Recorded here as Montaigne, which is wrong. The sentence is Franklin D. Roosevelt's, from his first inaugural address on 4 March 1933. Montaigne wrote on fear at length but did not write this.
